Infant 28 June 2012

28 June 2012

Dear Parents

Towards the end of the summer term, many children’s, parents’ and teachers’ minds turn to the next academic year. What will my next class be like? Will I get on with my teacher? How hard will the work be? It’s an even bigger step when moving on to a new school.

Over the past two weeks, and onto next week, many of our children have or will be making visits. These include our new entrants for Year R at Pewley Down and Year 3 at Holy Trinity. Then we have our Year 6 finding out all about their new schools.

It really must all seem so big and confusing for all of them. In all cases the security of the known is replaced by the unknown which is also bigger and populated by much bigger children who all seem to know exactly what to do.

We do all we can to make these transitions as easy as possible. We so enjoy the four-year olds arriving at school for the first time in the morning. Some full of confidence, others more wary. Very soon, however, they have all settled in very happily and start to look part of the place.

For the Year 2’s, there are two distinct groups; those moving up from Pewley Down who feel relaxed at just moving site, whilst staying at the same school with many faces they know. The other group are from a variety of infant schools who need to be looked after carefully for their first experience of the junior school.

Then we also launch our Year 6 children into the big world of secondary education. We have already spoken at length about every single child to the Heads of Year in those schools.

All of this effort is so worthwhile. It all comes down to our value of embracing the future with hope and confidence. We seek to make all our students happy and confident at the infants and the juniors, and ready for the next big step for them.

With best wishes
Richard

National School Sports Week
The children enjoyed the Olympic Sports taster sessions run by visiting coaches this week.  They had the opportunity to practice throwing the discus and javelin really far!

Year 2
Please look out for the letter coming home on Tuesday regarding Year 2’s trip to the beach on 17 July.

Teacher-led clubs
Next week (2-6 July) will be the last week for teacher-led clubs.  Lego Club will not be running (4 July).

Dad's Day, 3 & 4 July

1. Thank you for all the donations so far - but we need more! Please keep those bottles and jolly jars coming in!

2. Raffle tickets should have come home in bookbags - the raffle is our major fundraiser so please support it well! Please return tickets, counterfoils and any unsold tickets to the office by Friday 6 July.

Please be thinking about whether you could be a Class Rep next year (or Year rep, we generally have 4 per year). It would be great to have a new Committee signed up early so that you can hit the ground running in September! We are still in need of a Chair for next year. Please feel free to email/speak to me (louise.keiller@gmx.com) if you are considering this role - happy to answer any questions - and there is loads of info available in the FOPS files to help!

A big thank you also to the team that has worked so hard on the Year 2 Leavers Book. It has now gone off to print! We know it will be a lovely memento of the children's time at Pewley Thank you!

Veronika Koch and her family (cousins, Grandma and Mum) are going to be part of the SunWalk on 1st July in London which is a daytime 5K challenge.  More about Walk The Walk: “The charity looks at various projects and campaigns that are involved with breast cancer and grants funds to where we know it will make the most difference. It is our policy to look at projects that perhaps would not easily find funding, and to those that would perhaps take many years to achieve their goals and assist them in reaching them in a shorter time. We support research, which we feel is our future, and certainly over the past 13 years some ground breaking research has been made, not only into the causes of breast cancer but also identifying cancer genes and consequently improving the treatments. We also fund emotional and physical support for those that have cancer now."  How to sponsor our walk: http://www.walkthewalkfundraising.org/koch. Many thanks in advance, Veronika Koch, Hazel Class

French Student
Could you accommodate an 18 year old French girl during the month of August? Dates flexible. She is a friend of a friend, a student, completely trustworthy, but needing to improve her English. She would like to be a part of a family, and would join in/help with activities and children (maybe teach them a little French too?!). Please contact Caroline Rees carolinesrees@yahoo.co.uk.
